IASTM in Ilkeston
WHAT IT IS
WHAT IS IASTM?
IASTM stands for Instrument-Assisted Soft Tissue Mobilisation. It uses purpose-designed tools, applied with controlled pressure and glide across the skin and underlying soft tissue, as part of a hands-on treatment.
The instrument doesn’t replace skilled hands — it simply lets me apply and feel treatment in a slightly different way for certain areas and presentations. At Musculus, IASTM is used within an assessment-led sports massage plan where it genuinely adds something, not as a routine applied to everyone.
- A soft-tissue technique using purpose-designed treatment tools
- Used within a wider, assessment-led treatment plan — not in isolation
- An additional option alongside sports massage, mobility work and rehabilitation
- Chosen for the individual, the area and the goal of treatment — not applied automatically
MORE IS NOT AUTOMATICALLY BETTER.
Why might IASTM be used?
IASTM may be considered for selected musculoskeletal presentations where a tool-assisted approach suits the area and the goal better than hands alone. As with any technique, it’s chosen after assessment rather than used simply because it’s available.
People may have IASTM as part of treatment for:
- Localised muscular tightness or soreness
- Restricted or uncomfortable movement in a specific area
- Tendon-related or training-related symptoms
- Areas of previous injury or scar tissue, where appropriate
- Support around a return to training or activity
- Gym, sport or work-related muscular problems
You don’t need to be in pain to benefit — some people use it as part of ongoing support around training.
SUPPORT FOR EVERY BODY – NOT JUST ATHLETES
IASTM FOR EVERYDAY LIFE
IASTM isn’t reserved for competitive athletes. Musculus works with runners, gym users and strength athletes, but also with manual workers, desk-based workers and people returning to activity after a period of pain or injury. The common thread isn’t sport — it’s wanting to move, train, work or function more comfortably.
IS IASTM SUITABLE FOR EVERYONE?
Not always. IASTM may need to be avoided, adjusted or postponed with things like broken or infected skin, certain skin conditions, some bleeding disorders or medications, and a number of other health factors. This isn’t a complete list — suitability is always assessed individually, and you can decline the technique at any time. Some people notice temporary redness or minor marking in the treated area afterwards; this usually settles within a few days.
