ABOUT MARK

ADVANCED LEVEL 5 SPORTS MASSAGE THERAPIST

I’m Mark, owner of Musculus Sports Massage in Ilkeston.

My approach is simple: UNDERSTAND FIRST. TREAT SECOND.

I do not believe everybody needs the same massage, and I do not believe harder automatically means better. Where appropriate, assessment and testing help guide what treatment should follow.

MY BACKGROUND

Training has been a major part of my life for more than 20 years. My background includes strength training,  bodybuilding, fitness and personal training, giving me first-hand experience of progressive training, physical  performance and recovery.

Today I work with athletes, runners, bodybuilders, gym users, manual workers, desk-based clients and  people who simply want to move and feel better. You do not have to be an athlete to benefit from an  assessment-led sports massage approach.

ASSESSMENT BEFORE ASSUMPTION

Depending on the presentation, assessment may consider symptoms and relevant history, training and work  demands, movement you perform yourself, movement guided by the therapist, range of motion, resisted  muscle testing, functional movement and selected musculoskeletal tests.

Not everybody needs every test. Assessment should answer a question, not become a checklist.

Expert Sports Massage & Personal Coaching

Deeper knowledge, better results for every client

THE NERVOUS SYSTEM MATTERS TOO

Not every symptom that feels muscular begins and ends in muscle. Depending on the presentation,  neurological assessment may consider dermatomes, myotomes, reflexes, peripheral nerve pathways and neurodynamic findings

These are different ways of looking at sensation, muscle function and how the nervous system responds to  movement. The relevant terms can be made clickable so clients can open the plain-English definitions  provided in the pop-up section of this document.

The purpose is not to diagnose neurological disease. It is to recognise when symptoms may involve more  than muscle, adapt the approach appropriately and identify when further assessment or referral may be  needed.

WHAT LEVEL 5 ADDS

I trained to Level 5 in Sports Massage Therapy with the Sports Massage Academy. The qualification goes  considerably beyond hands-on massage and develops a deeper understanding of advanced anatomy and  the nervous system, musculoskeletal assessment, neurological assessment, neurodynamic testingpain science and the biopsychosocial model, alongside advanced treatment techniques, rehabilitation,  exercise instruction and progression, reassessment and referral.

In practice, this means looking beyond the area that simply feels tight or painful. Depending on the  symptoms, assessment may consider how someone moves, muscle function and strength, sensation,  neurological findings and whether the nervous system could be contributing to the presentation.

The purpose is not to diagnose medical or neurological conditions. It is to gather more useful information,  decide whether treatment is appropriate, choose a sensible treatment or rehabilitation approach and  recognise when referral to another healthcare professional may be the better option.

Level 5 sits at the same UK qualification level as qualifications such as an HND, Foundation Degree and  Diploma of Higher Education. That describes the level of study; it does not mean a Level 5 Sports Massage  qualification is itself a university degree.

MY QUALIFICATIONS

Together with more than two decades of training experience, these qualifications give me a broad  understanding of treatment, movement, exercise and rehabilitation.

Sports Massage, Assessment & Rehabilitation

UNDERSTANDING PAIN

Pain is real, but it is not always a direct measure of tissue damage. My Level 5 training includes modern pain science and the biopsychosocial model, which recognise that symptoms can be influenced by interacting  biological, psychological and social factors.

That does not mean pain is imagined or ‘all in the head’. It means the person matters as much as the painful  body part, and that treatment decisions should consider more than one isolated tissue.

CLINICAL REASONING

Clinical reasoning means combining what you tell me with what is found during relevant assessment to  decide what happens next.

That may mean sports massage, another treatment technique, movement or exercise, further assessment, a  change to the plan, or referral if something appears outside my professional scope.

TREATMENT WITH A PURPOSE

Level 5 gives me a broader assessment and treatment toolbox, but advanced practice is not about using  more techniques. It is about selecting the most appropriate approach for the person in front of me.

Sports massage remains the core treatment, supported by other techniques where they are appropriate and  likely to add something useful.

REHABILITATION

My Level 5 training and Advanced Personal Trainer background allow exercise and rehabilitation principles to be incorporated where useful.

This may include mobility, strengthening, exercise instruction, technique correction, exercise adaptation,  progression and support when returning to work, training, running, bodybuilding, sport or everyday activity.

The aim is not to hand everyone an unnecessarily complicated programme. A small number of useful  exercises, performed well and progressed sensibly, is often more valuable.

REASSESSMENT

Where something useful has been established before treatment – such as a movement, range of motion,  symptom response or functional finding – it can sometimes be checked again afterwards.

The question is simple: did what we just did make a useful difference? Reassessment helps guide what  happens next.

KNOWING WHEN NOT TO TREAT

Advanced practice also means recognising professional limits. If consultation or assessment suggests sports  massage is not appropriate, treatment may be modified, delayed or avoided.

Where necessary, referral to a GP, physiotherapist or another appropriate healthcare professional will be  recommended.

Mark is a genuinely nice bloke and also a consummate professional. I have had an on-going problem with my right hip causing shooting pain and the right side of my neck, restricting mobility. Mark rapidly identified the neck/trap issue and released it. He then went to work on the hip issue and the difference between me arriving and leaving were phenomenal. I left the session just enjoying full neck mobility and walking without hip tension and pain. Thanks Mark 👍

Had my first session with Mark Powell today. He started by asking loads of questions to really understand what was going on, even things I didn’t realise myself. We went through all the paperwork properly and then he got straight to work. He started off slowly to work out what muscles needed the most attention… but once he found them, there was absolutely no escape. He is so knowledgeable and talks you through everything, what muscle he’s working on, what he can feel, and why it’s causing problems. As someone trained in massage therapy (beauty), I actually found that side of it really interesting. Mark did have to get quite close to some more intimate areas, but he was completely professional and always asked for consent and only ever pushing as far as you’re comfortable. We had a good laugh through it, which definitely helped because I don’t think I’ve ever willingly let someone hurt me like that before… and yet I’ve already prepaid for another session next week, so clearly it works 😅 I’ll probably be sore for a few days, but I can already tell it’s going to be worth it. Great guy, massive respect for what he does and how he works. 10/10 would definitely recommend 💪

Welcoming and friendly, Mark certainly knows his stuff when it comes to sports massage. Felt instantly at ease and was talked through the whole process. I walked out of the session feeling ‘lighter’ than I had done in a long time, after many years of discomfort, due to poor posture through work and now with menopause aches and pains. I’ll be going for further sessions without a doubt. Can’t recommend Mark enough.

One of the best sports massages I’ve ever had. Mark is very knowledgeable and really gets to the root of the problem. I came in with a lot of tension from office work and elbow pain from the gym. After seeing Mark twice the elbow is much better and my neck, back and shoulders are pain free. Booking is really easy and a really professional service.

Had a massage with Mark this morning and I honestly couldn’t fault the experience. He really listened to what I was feeling, explained why I was in pain, and talked me through what I can do to help fix it — not just mask it. I felt completely comfortable the whole time; he was polite, professional, and really knowledgeable. He also taught me things I genuinely didn’t know about recovery, which I appreciated. I walked out feeling so much better and have already booked back in — not because I was pushed into a follow-up, but because Mark clearly works on actually fixing the issue rather than dragging it out over endless sessions for the sake of it. Would highly recommend.

Injuried my shoulder at the gym and been trying to manage the recovery myself for the past 2 weeks but only got worse. Called Mark this morning and managed to fit me in the same day. During the initial consultation at his premises it was immediatly clear this guy knows about his trade. Very knowledgeable and knew exactly what the issue was even before laying a hand on me. The session was intense and worked solid on manipulating my injury. Explained exactly what he was doing and provided some good tips to prevent the injury in future. Although I need another session to fully recover the injury I would say its a million times better than before. Having been to other therapists in the past with huge dissapointment ive come away from this one knowing ill be returning and using mark for maintainance. Dont hesitiate to book in with him, youll feel the benefit from session 1. Thanks again mate!

I have been receiving treatment for my leg and knee from Mark over past couple of months. I can't begin to state how much he has helped get me walking much better with less pain. Each session helps more and removes the sharp stabbing in my thigh. I would highly recommend seeing mark at Muscululas as he instantly understands the symptoms and works to relieve.
